Google-Project-TangoGoogle has been developing Project Tango. It is a new feature from Google; this project will move mapping to a new level and show the future of spatial personalization of mobile devices. If you think that now Google is watching you, it’s time to take a sedative. If you want your devices to be able to make useful every inch of the environment, it is interesting for you to know more about Tango.

So, Google decided to create a new smart phone type, which is able to “see” your things as you are, it is even able to help visually impaired people to orientate in the world of visual data. The aim of Project Tango is to move mobile devices to a human level of understanding space and motion. Below, you will see several things and facts which will help you to understand this new project.

The prototype of Google Project Tango is a five-inch smart phone

The main point of the project is a try to unite physical and digital world. People use visual signals in order to interact with environment. Google builds a prototype which will be able to do almost the same.

The current prototype is a five-inch smart phone which contains unique hardware and software. It is designed for the full tracking of the device’s movements in three dimensions and simultaneous creating of the environment map. Sensors allow the smart phone to make more than a quarter of a million 3D computing per second.

Project Tango is not Android but functions on it

Tango’s prototype functions on Android and offers API, which helps apk based on Java, C/C++ and Unity to know information about the phone’s location, its orientation and moving off the objects. Development of the software and hardware complex is not the part of OS and it is singled out the separate project. The other specifications are still in secret.

Project Tango is able to perform a revolution in navigation and augmented reality

Phone which can create 3D models of its immediate environment can have wide range of use. For example, Google may give more detailed directions for navigation in buildings, as shopping malls.

It can directly fasten the development of augmented reality apps, which put digital information on photos and videos about real world in real-time.

The number of Project Tango sets for development is limited

Today Google offers to developers 200 prototypes, but because of limits of FCC (the USA) developers who want to see first devices should work in registered organizations, but it is still not clear why.

But not all sets for developers are the same. As Google affirms, some devices are optimized for mapping rooms, the other are for data handling from the integrated sensors, and the third are for single or multiplayer games.

Project Tango has 16 partners; Google continues searching for new ones

In the list of partners there is Modivus (a startup of Silicon Valley, which creates chips for data interpretation from sensors and cameras). The participation of this organization tells us that robotics community is interested in development of the computer vision and navigation from Google.
