Cause of the Error

As mentioned above that the CRC error in PST file occurs due to corruption in Microsoft Outlook PST file. Consequently, you cannot access the PST file contents and hence any of the Outlook data items.

Well, it now becomes your priority to resolve the error and fix corruption at the earliest. Below procedure allows you to perform all essential steps to get over the situation. You first need to check your hard disk, and then recreate the personal folders file (PST).

Step 1: Open command prompt. You can open it by doing the following:

  • On the computer running Windows XP, click on 'Start' button, click 'Run', type 'cmd' in the box, and then click on 'OK'.
  • On a computer system running Windows 7 or Windows Vista, in the 'Start Search' box, click on 'Start', type 'cmd' in the box, and then press Enter. If you are prompted to enter an administrator password, specify the password detail or click on 'Allow'.

Step 2: Once the command prompt is opened, type chkdsk /f and press Enter.

Step 3: If you receive an error like following or similar, press Y -> Enter, and then restart your computer.

The type of the file system is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

Step 4: Once the Chkdsk finishes, close command prompt.

Step 5: Restart Outlook and if you find that the problem still occurs, you need to repair personal folders file.

In order to let you repair your PST file, Microsoft provides an inbuilt utility named ‘Inbox Repair Tool’ that is a dedicated utility to fix PST corruption. The file is saved as Scanpst.exe on your computer. Perform the following steps to use the utility:

Step 1: Close Microsoft Outlook

Step 2: Click ‘Start’, point the mouse over ‘Find’ or ‘Search’, depending on the operating system you are using

Step 3: In the box named ‘Search for files or folders named’, type scanpst.exe

Step 4: Once the file is found, double-click the scanpst.exe file to allow the Inbox Repair Tool to run

Step 5: Enter the file name and path of the .pst file or you can also locate the file by using by clicking on ‘Browse’

Step 6: Click on ‘Start’
